Charlies Place
Charlies Place was renamed Wagon Wheel Off Road Staging Area by the BLM. The GPS coordinates are: 35.572552, -117.552429. The nearby Spangler Hills Off-Highway Vehicle Area (OHV) offers over 57,000 acres of open riding. You can camp anywhere in the open area, up to 14 days. The most popular staging area is Teagle Wash, located east of the Trona-Red Mountain Road on BLM Route RM143. This site provides a large area for camping.
On this trip Pete, Ed, Kevin and myself camped just off of Trona Rd 3.1 miles East of Highway 395. We enjoy this camping location because it allows for day trips to California City, the Rand mountains, the El Paso mountains, the hills above Ridgecrest, Charlies Place, and even the Husky Monument. Our campsite is in a valley just off RM44, there are numerous spots to camp in this area. We left camp and headed over to the Major Adams X15 Memorial which is just a short ride across the valley. We then headed down a nice little sand wash (RM28). After about a mile we exited the sand wash onto RM180 and then left onto RM194 and crossed the railroad tracks. We turned right onto RM26 which is a wide dirt road and headed North. We crossed Trona Rd. at the bottom of the Spangler Hills and took RM007(a) up all the way to the edge of the wilderness boundary. We continued across the top of the Spangler Hills on RM007 East which is a cool wide sand wash. This eventually drops you down into the desert floor just South of Teagle Wash Rd. We then headed North towards Charlies Place exploring many of the trails that criss-cross Randsburg-Wash Rd.

We stopped for lunch and a beer in the shade of a large rock then headed back to camp riding North of Trona Rd. The video shows the area around Charlies Place and I have also provided some pictures below.
