Alabama Hills
The Alabama Hills are located at the foot of the Eastern Sierra's just West of Lone Pine CA. The rock formations with numerous roads and trails winding through the area are a great place for exploring and camping. The Alabama Hills have become a popular setting for many movies and numerous commercials. Lori who is an Event Organizer for my Meetup group (Valley Dirt Riders) planned this adventure as part of her Meetup to the ghost town of Cerro Gordo. I arrived at the Boulder Creek RV Resort a couple days early so that I could explore the area in more depth. The road that enters the RV Park and also crosses Highway 395 going West is a designated Combined User Route. This allows OHV and licensed vehicles to share the route. Take Lubken Canyon Road West until it ends at Horseshoe Meadows Rd, turn right and continue until it ends at Whitney Portal Rd, turn right and travel about 1/2 a mile until you come to Movie Rd. Turn left and start exploring.

On Saturday after our adventure up to Cerro Gordo, many of us met for dinner at the Pizza Factory in Lone Pine. We decided that we would meet at 7:30PM at the entrance to the RV Park and head over to the Alabama Hills for a night ride. We got there a little before dusk and I led the group around the hills and then into the rocks. I captured some of this ride on the video linked below. After leading everyone into a dead end, I managed to loose the group while I was exploring some side trails. I wandered around a bit by myself and I could see the lights of the group up in the rocks, I just didn't know how best to meet up with them. I decided to just park with my lights on and sure enough they found me. A few of us headed up towards the base of the Sierra Nevada's and took a long wide dirt road that dropped us off several miles up on Whitney Portal Rd. We took the highway back down, turned right on Horseshoe Meadows Rd, and headed back to the RV Park.
Make sure you check out the many arches located in the Alabama Hills, this map shows the general location. You can find many other maps online that show the sites of many movie shoots.

On our way back from the Reward Mine adventure, Lori led us by the Manzanar War Relocation Center and then we entered the Alabama Hills from the North. We spent about an hour exploring then I decided to head back to camp since I thought my SxS might be overheating. When I got back to camp, I checked the fluids and all was good. The other folks spent another hour or so before returning. For more information on this area check out my Adventure page for the Cerro Gordo and the Reward Mine. Also be sure to check out my other adventure videos on my YouTube Channel...Barrys ATV Adventures.
